The Syrian Communist Party (Unified) started as a result of the events surrounding the Sixth Conference of the Syrian Communist Party. What had originally been the Syrian–Lebanese Communist Party was divided into the Syrian and Lebanese Communist Parties in 1943 as a result of the division of the countries of Syria and Lebanon. In the Sixth Conference (held July 15, 1986) a number of issues arose, including the issue of perestroika in the Soviet Union, which lead to the division of the party into two factions: one led by Yusuf Faisal and the other by Ammar Bakdash. The Bakdash faction became the Syrian Communist Party (Bakdash), while the Faisal faction became the Syrian Communist Party (Unified). The Syrian Communist Party (Unified) held their own Sixth Conference on January 30th, 1987.[1]
