BadEmpanada is an Australian-Argentine communist YouTuber.[1] He makes long-form video essays about history, settler colonialism, imperialism and Latin American politics. BadEmpanada also has a stream clips channel and a Spanish language channel.
Criticism
Behaviour
On stream he often engages toxic behaviour, including involving himself in petty drama between content creators[2][3] (although he has since stated that he would like to avoid petty internet drama in the future)[4], making unsubstantiated claims,[5] engaging in "debate bro" behaviour such as reductio ad absurdum[6], and promoting misinformation.[7]
BadEmpanada has also celebrated the doxxing and subsequent retirement of BayArea415 from the internet. He questioned whether BayArea415 was "really at risk" after fascists revealed his identity.[7]
Criticism of AES
BadEmpanada blindly criticises AES projects such as China calling it "capitalist", "imperialist" and "communist in name only."[6]
Misrepresentation
Generally, BadEmpanada will accurately represent those he is criticising, although this is not always the case (especially when there is no obvious response to what's being said). Sometimes, he resorts to strawmanning, intentionally or otherwise. A chief example of this is his misrepresentation of Bay Area415 in a video discussing Chinese 'imperialism'.
In the video, Bay noted that he prefers not to refer to Third World countries as 'backwards' or 'underdeveloped' and showed a clip from Michael Parenti's "Yellow Speech" explaining why.[8] BadEmpanada took this as Bay quoting Parenti out of context in order to defend China, when this was not at all the case. He then proceeded to quote Parenti criticising China's market reforms and handling of the situation in Tibet,[6] as though the quotes had any relevance to what was being said or the topic at hand.
