Southeast Asia, also called South East Asia or abbreviated as SEA, is a region of Asia. It is generally considered to be the area geographically situated east of the Indian subcontinent, south of China, and northwest of Australia. Approximately 686 million people live in the region, equivalent to 8.58% of the total world population.[1] The countries comprising Southeast Asia are Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Timor-Leste (East Timor), and Brunei Darussalam. Indonesia is the largest and most populous country of the region.[1][2] The region is also the location of two AES states, Vietnam and Laos.

Geographically, Southeast Asia consists of two distinct major regions, a continental projection commonly called mainland Southeast Asia (sometimes referred to as Indochina or the Indochinese Peninsula) and a string of archipelagoes to the south and east of the mainland, commonly called insular or maritime Southeast Asia (sometimes referred to as the East Indies in certain historical contexts).[3]
