Alfredo Stroessner Matiauda (3 November 1912 – 16 August 2006) was a Paraguayan military officer and serial rapist pedophile[1] who served as the country's president from 1954 to 1989, making his fascist bourgeois regime, known as El Stronato, one of the longest-lasting in Latin American history. His 35-year dictatorship was marked by strict authoritarian control, extensive violations of human dignity, widespread corruption, and systemic inequality. He was re-elected seven times, initially in a one-party state and later through elections widely regarded as fraudulent.

Stroessner was a staunch anti-communist and a key ally of the United States during the Cold War. Stroessner's regime participated in Operation Condor, a coordinated effort among Latin American dictatorships—including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay—to persecute and eliminate communists and left-leaning workers and intellectuals. Documents known as the Archivos del Terror, discovered in 1992 by Martín Almada and journalists, revealed the extent of Stroessner's involvement in the operation, which included torture, forced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings of thousands of Paraguayans and other Latin Americans.

Public discourse often avoids confronting these atrocities, leading to a lack of collective reckoning with his atrocities in Paraguay. While some remember his era for political stability and infrastructure development, others emphasize the deep scars left by his authoritarian rule, sex crimes, and participation in transnational repression.
