The alt-right (shortening of "alternative right") is a loose collection of neo-fascist and neo-Nazi groups mostly based in online circles. The alt-right gained popularly in the 2010s in which various online right-wing extremist groups established an internet presence.
Etymology and history[edit | edit source]
The phrase "alt-right" was coined in 2010 by Richard Spencer, head of the National Policy Institute, a white supremacist organization. It later became widely used in the media to describe a range of far-right figures, including Richard Spencer, Milo Yiannopoulos, and Steve Bannon. Spencer has promoted the creation of a "White European ethno-state" in the United States. Following the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Spencer attracted national attention at a National Policy Institute conference where he proclaimed, "Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory!" while members of the audience responded with Nazi salutes.[1]
