António de Oliveira Salazar was a Portuguese fascist dictator who ruled Portugal as Prime Minister from September 1932 to February 1968. For a few days in 1926 after the military coup and from 1928 to 1940 he was minister of finance as well as minister of the colonies in 1930. He was also minister of war from 1936 to 1944 and minister of foreign affairs from 1936 to 1947 as well as a range of minor roles.

Salazar was born in the village of Vimieiro on April 28, 1889. He graduated from a Jesuit school before graduating from the University of Coimbra where he was an economics professor from 1917 to 1928.[1]
Political career[edit | edit source]
Salazar was one of the founders of the Catholic Centre party and was elected a deputy to parliament for that party. Following the military coup in 1926 he held several roles but in particular as minister of finance before becoming Prime Minister in 1932 and seizing complete power.[1]
