Benazir Bhutto (21 June 1953 – 27 December 2007) was a Pakistani politician who served as the 11th prime minister of Pakistan from 1988 to 1990, and again from 1993 to 1996. She was the first woman elected to head a bourgeois government in a Muslim-majority country and was the daughter of former prime minister and president Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Bhutto also chaired or co-chaired the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) from 1982 until her assassination in 2007.
Bhutto was responsible for transitioning the PPP away from democratic socialism and towards neoliberalism, and consistently sought the backing of the west throughout her rule. She staunchly supported the War on terror, likely leading to her assassination in December 2007 for which al-Qaeda claimed responsibility, labelling her "the most precious American asset".[1]
