Bengal famine of 1943

From ProleWiki, the proletarian encyclopedia

The Bengal Famine of 1943 was a man-made famine that occurred during WW2 in British India (mainly in the Bengal region which is today split between India and Bangladesh). It was one of many famines that happened during the period of British rule over India. The famine is said to have killed 3 million people. The British Prime Minister at the time, Winston Churchill, refused to help despite other imperial officials asking him for some minor aid. Winston Churchill later blamed the Indian people for the famine suggesting that they were "breeding like rabbits". The famine remains the last famine in Indian history, which showcases how little the British actually cared for imperial subjects.[1]
