Catherine Martina Ann Connolly (born 12 July 1957) is an Irish politician who has served as president of Ireland since November 2025. Although a progressive figure, given that the presidency is predominantly ceremonial, she does not have much practical importance. Previously she served as Leas-Cheann Comhairle from 2020 to 2024 and as Teachta Dála for Galway West from 2016 until 2025 when she was elected president.
Connolly is an outspoken anti-imperialist critic of NATO and the EU, and condemns western militarism in Ukraine and the increased German defence spending, comparing the latter to Nazi militarization in the 1930s.[1] She also condemns Israel and its genocide, as well as the role the west plays in enabling it, and although she also condemns Operation Flood of Al-Aqsa as a "war crime", she still defends Hamas having a role in the future governance of Palestine.[2]
