Cheddi Berret Jagan (22 March 1918 – 6 March 1997) was a Guyanese Marxist and leader of the Guyanese independence movement. He founded the People's Progressive Party and served as Prime Minister of British Guiana from 1961 to 1964 and President of independent Guyana from 1992 to 1997.[1]
Premiership[edit | edit source]
On orders from CIA agent Richard Welch, Statesian cult leader Jim Jones funded a group of rebels who started strikes and anti-Indian race riots in February 1962. Jagan declared a state of emergency and had to rely on British forces to restore order, discrediting his government. Jagan lost the next election in December 1964 to pro-CIA candidate Forbes Burnham.[1]
