Chen Duxiu (8 October 1879 – 27 May 1942) was a Chinese philosopher and communist and co-founder of the Communist Party of China. He was also a major figure in the Xinhai Revolution and May Fourth Movement.[1]
Old Democratic Period
Between 1901 and 1914, Chen traveled to Japan five times. He established an organization with Zhang Ji and Su Manshu dedicated to overthrowing the Qing monarchy.[1]
New Democratic Period
Chen founded the Youth Magazine in 1915 to spread Marxism. He and Li Dazhao also founded Weekly Review in 1918 to promote revolutionary socialism. The 1st Congress of the CPC elected him as Secretary of the Central Bureau. He was elected as Chairman of the Central Executive at the 2nd and 3rd Congresses, General Secretary of the CEC at the 4th Congress, and General Secretary of the Central Committee at the 5th Congress.[1]
