Christopher Joseph Helali (born 1988/89 in Worcester, Massachussetts) is a Statesian lawyer, journalist, activist, and public official concurrently serving as the High Bailiff of Orange County, Vermont and the International Secretary of the American Communist Party (ACP). He was previously the International Secretary of the Party of Communists USA before leaving that organisation in 2024. Helali unsuccessfully ran for Representative of Vermont's at-large congressional district in the 2020 election.

During the war on terror, despite supposedly already being a Marxist–Leninist, Helali chose to participate in imperialism for his own benefit, joining the U.S. Army in 2011 to pay for his education. He avoided deployment to Afghanistan, serving in the Chaplain Corps and retiring in 2015 with a commissioned officer rank. He volunteered in Rojava's International Freedom Battalion in 2017, where he fought against ISIS.[1]

Helali was formerly an anarcho-communist and the Secretary-Treasurer of the Boston Branch of the IWW in 2016 before being disgraced and accused of embezzlement of organisation funds to the amount of $4,510 by the IWW Boston in a Facebook post.[2]

Zipporah Legarde, Helali’s ex-partner, stated that the two had decided to have a child, but that Helali abandoned her after she fell pregnant, refusing to take responsibility for the child.[2] On 2 May 2019, Zipporah wrote a statement on Google Docs explaining that Helali had filed a temporary restraining order against her and had been purposely avoiding child support and paternity papers, noting that his legal actions and emotional abuse jeopardized her safety and warning that those who supported her should not engage with Helali since this might extend the conflict, writing, "we should honor his choice, especially as disobeying puts me in danger of further involvement with the State."[3]

In November 2024, Helali was declared to have won a county election in the State of Vermont for the office of High Bailiff. As per the state's statutes, "A high bailiff may serve writs which the sheriff is incompetent to serve, and his or her fees shall be the same as those of the sheriff,"[4] effectively making him an agent of the police. Local newspaper The Herald reported on November 7 however that the election was still undecided as county clerks were counting votes.[5] Helali was one of two write-in candidates as neither had sent their applications before the August deadline.[6]

Political positions[edit | edit source]

Homophobia and transphobia[edit | edit source]

Helali feigns a position of neutrality when it comes to LGBT+ issues, arguing that it is a personal matter rather than a political one which is of far less importance than the struggle against capitalism and imperialism. In reality however, as demonstrated by his words and attitude, Helali thinks that same-sex marriage should be illegal, that LGBT+ activism should be criminalised, and that trans people should be discriminated against in sports.[7]

In a 2025 interview, he praised the Communist Party of Greece for its opposition to gay marriage, citing "the need that every child has for a mother and a father." He also commended Russian President Vladimir Putin (who signed into law a bill criminalising LGBT+ activism) for his stance on the issue, saying that "I like what Putin has said before, you know: don't harm the kids, don't have the parades, and [keep] everything else in your home—okay, whatever, you know? And I believe this." Almost immediately after this statement, in a stunning display of Orwellian doublethink, Helali whined about how homophobes could not openly express their bigotry at many Statesian educational institutions.[7]

On the topic of transgender issues, Helali said that: "Do I think a man belongs in woman's sports? No. Do I think a woman belongs in the men's sports? No. If we have men, it's for men. If we have women, we have women. If we want to make a third category—make third category. I don't care." In other words, he views trans women as men and trans men as women, and he believes that they should be excluded from the sports category matching their identity.[7]
