The Communist Party of Australia (CPA) is a Marxist–Leninist party in Australia,[1] and the successor to the original Communist Party of Australia founded in 1920.
Originally founded in 1971 as the Socialist Party of Australia (SPA), the party assumed the mantle of the Communist Party of Australia in 1996 after the original dissolved in 1991, becoming the Social-Democratic Think Tank SEARCH foundation.[2][3]
Program
Anti-imperialism
At its 14th party congress in 2022, it condemned AUKUS, an imperialist military alliance that includes Australia.[4] The CPA advocates for the removal of U.S. military and intelligence bases from Australia and the Pacific.[5]
Education
The CPA supports free, universal, and secular public education from preschool through college, with student unions for universities.[6]
Environment
The CPA advocates nationalization of Australian electrical infrastructure and government subsidies for renewable energy. It advocates phasing out cotton and rice farming, which use large amounts of water.[7]
Indigenous rights
The CPA recognizes Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples as the original inhabitants of Australia and supports their right to own and control Australia's land and resources. It also advocates for the establishment of an Aboriginal advisory body that is elected by indigenous voters and supports the use of indigenous languages in all primary schools.[8]
Transportation
The CPA advocates for publicly controlled passenger and freight trains and increased infrastructure for biking.[7]
Women's rights
The CPA advocates for elimination of the gender wage gap, legal abortion, and at least 26 weeks of paid parental leave.[9]
International relations
The CPA maintains fraternal relations with a number of Communist Parties around the world through its international department. The 14th congress of the CPA received greetings from the Communist Party of China, Workers' Party of Korea,[10] Lao People's Revolutionary Party,[11] Communist Party USA, Progressive Party of Working People; Communist Party of the Russian Federation, Communist Party of Britain, Communist Party of Swaziland, Workers' Party of Belgium,[10] German Communist Party, Communist Party of Brazil, New Communist Party of Yugoslavia, Communist Party of Sweden, Communists of Catalonia, Party of Labour of Austria, Workers' Party of Ireland, Communist Party of India,[12] KKE, PKP, Communist Party of Canada, and the State of Palestine.[11]
