The Doctors' plot was a suspected conspiracy in the Soviet Union during the 1950s to assassinate leading government and party officials.[1]
Death of Zhdanov[edit | edit source]
Lydia Timashuk blamed doctors for improperly treating Zhdanov in 1948 both before and after he died. However, according to Stalin's daughter Svetlana, Stalin believed the doctors were innocent. Mikhail Ryumin led the investigation and arrested nine doctors accused of being connected U.S. intelligence agencies.[1]
Death of Stalin[edit | edit source]
Guards found Stalin unconscious in his room on the night of 1 March 1953 but did not call a doctor. He did not receive first aid for twelve hours after his collapse and died on 5 March. After his death, Beria arrested Ryumin and Ignatyev and released the doctors accused of killing Zhdanov on 3 April.[1]
