Gilbert Diendéré (born c. 1960) is a Burkinabé general and former coup leader with close ties to the USA. He was part of the group of soldiers that murdered Thomas Sankara in 1987. French authorities awarded as a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 2008. He briefly ruled Burkina Faso during a coup in 2015. In 2022, a court sentenced Diendéré to life in prison for Sankara's murder along with Blaise Compaoré and his former head of security, Hyacinthe Kafundo.[1]
