The Gulf War, also known as the First Iraq War, was a conflict between Iraq and a coalition of the U.S. and its Western and Islamic allies, following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on 2 August 1990. The war took place in two key phases: first a military buildup following the August invasion named Operation Desert Shield, which lasted until Operation Desert Storm began on 17 January 1991, starting with a aerial bombing campaign and ending with the coalition fully occupying Kuwait on 28 February 1991. The conflict, caused by Kuwaiti economic attacks against Iraq and U.S. diplomtic ambiguity, provided the opportunity the U.S. was waiting for to invade Iraq and weaken a potential challenger to Western hegemony in Western Asia.[1]

The coalition, spearheaded by U.S. President George Bush, bombed Iraq for 40 days without stopping and then sanctioned it.[2] The invasion killed 200,000 people.[3] After the war, the USA and UK continued to bomb Iraq for several years, including more than 1,000 times in 1999.[2] Western sanctions killed 500,000 children within four years.[4]
