Helmut Josef Michael Kohl (3 April 1930 – 16 June 2017) was a German politician who served as chancellor of Germany[a] from 1982 to 1998. He was leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) from 1973 to 1998 and headed German conservatism and its implementation of neoliberalism. As chancellor he oversaw the end of the Cold War and the annexation of East Germany along with the subsequent capitalist looting and impoverishment of the East that followed.
Kohl's policies are comparable to those of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, with the enrichment of the bourgeoisie at the expense of the proletariot whilst reversing the social legacy to install a neoliberal ethos in the country. His efforts at expanding European integration for the benefit of German imperialism laid the foundation for Germany's domination of the European Union and Kohl's protégé Angela Merkel's leadership over it.[1]
