Juan Almeida Bosque (17 February 1927 – 11 September 2009) was a Cuban revolutionary, politician, and songwriter.
Early life
Almeida was born in Havana in 1927 in a poor family with 12 children. He became a bricklayer at the age of 11. He met Fidel Castro at the University of Havana in his 20s.[1]
Cuban Revolution
Almeida participated in the attack on the Moncada barracks on 26 July 1953 at the beginning of the Cuban Revolution. He was sent to prison for 20 months and then went to Mexico to train. He returned to Cuba in 1956 to fight against Batista's US-backed dictatorship. During the revolution, he became Commander of the Mario Muñoz Column of the Third Front.[1]
Later life
Almeida was elected to the Politburo of the PCC in 1965. At the time of his death, he was also the Vice President of the Council of State.[1]
