Julius Kambarage Nyerere (13 April 1922 – 14 October 1999) was a Tanzanian politician who served as Prime Minister of Tanganyika from 1961 until 1964. The country changed its name to Tanzania, and thus he became Tanzania's first president from 1964 to 1985. His 1967 proclamation of a socialist state threatened the British imperialists and Tanzanian bourgeoisie. He organized collectivization programs that sent peasants to ujamaa villages, sometimes relying on coercion by the military.[1]
