Manna was an ancient kingdom located near Lake Urmia in modern-day Iran.

History[edit | edit source]

During the reign of Ishpuini, Urartu led raids into Manna. The Urartians stole livestock but did not destroy the territory they raided. The defeated side was allowed to keep some of its property in exchange for supporting Urartu. Argishti I of Urartu allied with Manna during the early eighth century BCE.[1]

In the late eighth century BCE, the Median chieftain Dahyukah became ruler of Manna, which was then under Assyrian influence. In 716 BCE, Rusa I of Urartu captured 22 Mannean fortresses and forced Dahyukah to break his alliance with Assyria. Šarrukīn II then deposed Dahyukah after defeating Urartu. Manna again became a vassal of Assyria.[1]

King Huvaxšarah of Media annexed Manna at the end of the seventh century BCE after defeating Assyria.[1]
