Mari was an ancient Mesopotamian city-state.
History[edit | edit source]
Akkadians settled the area of Mari by the early third millennium BCE.[1]
In the early 18th century BCE, the son of the Assyrian king Šamšīaddu ruled Mari. King ʿAmmurāpi of Bābilim (Babylon) drove out the Assyrians and installed Zimrilim, the descendant of an earlier local dynasty, as king. In 1760 BCE, ʿAmmurāpi turned against Mari and conquered it. He destroyed Zimrilim's palace following a failed rebellion two years later.[1]
