Michael Vernon Townley (born December 5, 1942) is a Statesian explosives expert and CIA agent who moved to Chile to work for Pinochet's secret police (DINA). He tried to prevent Salvador Allende's election in 1970. In 1974, he killed former Minister of Defense Carlos Prats with a car bomb. In 1978, he was sentenced to ten years in prison for the 1976 assassination of Orlando Letelier and Ronni Moffitt but was released into the Witness Protection Program after only five years. He claimed that he killed them on orders from DINA director Manuel Contreras and Pedro Espinoza.[1]
