Mubarak Al-Sabah (c. 1837 – 28 November 1915) "the Great", nicknamed "The lion of the peninsula", was a Kuwaiti Sheikh who ruled the Sheikhdom of Kuwait as Emir from 1896 until his death in 1915. Mubarak ascended the throne after allegedly assassinating his predecessor and half-brother, Muhammad Al-Sabah and turned Kuwait into a British protectorate to safeguard his power. The modern constitution of Kuwait mandates that the Emir of Kuwait must be a descendant of Mubarak from the ruling Al-Sabah family.
