Mutsuhito (3 November 1852 – 29 July 1912), commonly known as Emperor Meiji, was a Japanese monarch who ruled as the 122nd emperor of Japan from 1867 until his death in 1912. The defining event of his reign was the Meiji Restoration, an incomplete bourgeois revolution which laid the foundations for the development of capitalism and eventually imperialism in Japan. Mutsuhito was the first emperor of the Empire of Japan and saw the power of the monarchy restored with the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate.
