Nikolai Alexandrovich Semashko (26 September 1874 – 18 May 1949) was a Russian scientist and medical doctor who served as the first People's Commissar of Health of the Soviet Union from 1918 to 1930. Dr. Semashko was integral to the establishment and development of the Commissariat of Health, the first central health organization established in Russia. Despite many petty-bourgeois medical professionals in Russia being opposed to Revolution, he "gained the respect and loyalty of so many of the medical profession in Russia to whom the theory of Communism is still abhorrent."[1]
