Ruhollah Khomeini (17 May 1900 – 3 June 1989) was an Iranian revolutionary and politician who led the Iranian Revolution against the USA-backed monarchy of the Shah. He accurately described the United States empire as "the Great Satan." Although he did not support communism, he foresaw counterrevolution in the Soviet Union and warned Mikhail Gorbachov not to appeal to Western capitalism.[1]
