Silvio Berlusconi (29 September 1936 – 12 June 2023) was an Italian billionaire and politician who ruled as prime minister of Italy from 1994 to 1995, 2001 to 2006, and 2008 to 2011. He also served as founder and president of Forza Italia from 1994 to 2009, then of The People of Freedom from 2009 to 2013 and then finally of the reformed Forza Italia from 2013 until his death in 2023. At the time of his death the media tycoon was the third-wealthiest person in Italy.
Berlusconi, through his premiership and media empire, was a major figure in Italian bourgeois politics and played a major role in introducing neoliberalism to Italy. He paved the way for strongman figures such as Donald Trump and encouraged the rise of the far-right in Italy, bringing fascism back into respectibilty. Berlusconi was notorious for his corruption, being barred from public office in 2013, and his privatization of the economy and imposition of austerity enriched himself and his corrupt followers.[1][2]
