The Social Democratic Party (Japanese: 社会民主党, romanised Shakai Minshutō; often shortened to just 社民党, Shamintō) is a minor social democratic political party in Japan. It is the direct successor to the Japan Socialist Party, which was the primary opposition in Japan against the neoliberal Liberal Democratic Party up until its dissolution in 1996.
