The Second Spanish Republic was the government of Spain from 1931 to 1939. It was supported by the Soviet Union as well as Mexico, which had recently had a revolution.[1]
Foundation[edit | edit source]
Right after the end of the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera, an electoral alliance of liberal republicans and social-democrats won the Spanish local elections in April 1931 and proclaimed the Republic. The king Alfonso XIII, who previously supported the Dictatorship, went to exile. The new government began to implement reformist mesures such as secularization, work regulations, a moderate agrarian reform and granting autonomy to Catalonia.
In 1936, a more radical Popular Front came to power and implemented progressive anti-landlord policies.[1]
