The Spartacus League Uprising, also known as the January Uprising, was a large-scale armed insurrection that took place in Berlin, Germany, from January 5 to January 15, 1919. Led by the "Spartacus League" (the precursor to the Communist Party of Germany) and its radical left-wing supporters, the uprising aimed to overthrow the newly established Weimar Republic and establish a soviet-style socialist government.[citation needed] It was ultimately suppressed by the provisional government led by Friedrich Ebert and the Social Democratic Party, with direct paramilitary forces like the Freikorps.[citation needed] The leaders, Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht, were killed after its failure.[citation needed] This event marked the climax and endpoint of the German November Revolution, signifying the collapse of hopes for achieving socialism through parliamentary means in Germany.[citation needed] The Freikorps, which were instrumental in the rise of Fascism within Germany through ideals of the many conservative figures within the Freikorps.[citation needed]
