James Terry Sanford (August 20, 1917 – April 18, 1998) was a U.S. politician who served as the 65th Governor of North Carolina from 1961 to 1965. In 1963, John F. Kennedy was planning for Sanford to replace Lyndon B. Johnson as his running mate for the 1964 presidential election due to Johnson's corruption, but Johnson managed to remain in power when Kennedy was assassinated only three days after proposing to replace him with Sanford.[1]
