Ursula Gertrud von der Leyen (née Albrecht; born 8 October 1958) is a German politician and physician who has served as President of the European Commission since 2019. Previously she held varioys positions in the German government of Angela Merkel between 2005 and 2019, most notably as Minister for Defence from 2013 to 2019. Von der Leyen is also an influential member of the right-wing Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its affiliated European political party, the European People's Party (EPP).
As Commission President von der Leyen has embarked on a campaign for increased European militarism, proposing plans to pump €850 billion into European militaries. She has pushed for increased warmongering against Russia and continued support for Ukraine in the Russo-Ukrainian War in the interests of European imperialism.[1] Von der Leyen has also been a steadfast supporter of Israel and has offered little complaint about the ongoing genocide, prompting UN representive Francesca Albanese to call for von der Leyen to be investigated for complicity in Israel’s war crimes.[2]
