Unug, also known by its Akkadian name Uruk, was an ancient Sumerian city-state.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
Third Dynasty[edit | edit source]
In the 24th century BCE, Unug allied with King Lugalzagesi of Umma to defeat Lagash and overthrow its reformist king Urukagina. Lugalzagesi then conquered Unug and most of the other Sumerian cities. He ruled with Unug as his capital. Soon after, the Akkadian king Šarrumkīn conquered Sumer.[1]
Fifth Dynasty[edit | edit source]
Gutian tribes from the Zagros Mountains conquered Mesopotamia during the reign of Šarkališarri and ruled for about 60 years. At the end of the 22nd century BCE, King Utuhengal of Unug defeated the Gutians and drove them out of the country. He claimed sovereignty over all of Sumer but was soon overtaken by Urim, led by Urnammu.[1]
