The West Bank is Palestinian territory illegally occupied by Israel since 1967 and is home to three million Palestinians, though there are around 700,000 Israeli settlers who illegally live there. It was divided into three zones A, B, and C which have always functioned as mechanisms for control and surveillance; this partition was enacted in the Oslo Accords in 1995. Area A, spanning 18% of the West Bank, is the Palestinian-administered part of the territory and includes Ramallah, Nablus, and Bethlehem. Despite being officially under Palestinian control, it is constantly attacked by settlers, who are currently attempting to extend their presence into Area A.[1]
Area B is where Palestinians live but are policed and surveilled by the occupying Israeli forces. Area B spans 22% of the West Bank and contains the majority of the territory’s rural Palestinian population. While Area A covers the major cities, Area B encompasses hundreds of villages and the outskirts of large towns. The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have free rein to conduct arrests, raids, or military operations; although they also exercise such powers in Area A, it is not formally stated.[2]
Area C is the occupied Israeli part of the West Bank. It is constantly expanding as it absorbs territory from Areas A and B, currently spanning 60% and growing of the West Bank. Area C is the only contiguous area and surrounds and divides Palestinian land, meaning that travel between Palestinian cities usually requires passing through Area C, forcing Palestinians to interact with violent, chauvinist settlers.[3]
As of February 16th 2026, the Zionist entity approved a major land registration process for the occupied West Bank, combining this with recently approved measures that expand Israeli authority and oversight directly into Areas A and B. Together, these measures allow Israel to facilitate land grabs and enforce its laws within Areas A and B. [4]
Bezalel Smotrich, the Zionist finance minister, has also recently approved a West Bank demolition militia.[4]
We are continuing the revolution of settlement and strengthening our hold across all parts of our land
