William Shakespeare (c. 26 April 1564 – 23 April 1616) was an influential English playwright and actor.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Shakespeare was born during the period of primitive accumulation. His father was a glove-maker in a guild and his mother was the daughter of a landowner. Shakespeare attended grammar school until he was 15, when he had to join his father's business.[1]

Political role[edit | edit source]

As a member of the rising bourgeoisie, Shakespeare played a progressive role against feudalism and religious fundamentalism. He was not able to make a living from his plays, and his theatre only charged a penny for attendance.[1]

Authorship[edit | edit source]

Opponents of Shakespeare claim that feudal aristocrats such as Edward de Vere or Francis Bacon wrote his plays. They deny that it was possible for a commoner without a university education to write such plays.[1]
