In 1959, 33.8% of the Kazakh population worked in industry, construction, and transportation and 39.1% worked in [[agriculture]]. Kazakh literacy rates increased from 25.2% to 96.9% between 1926 and 1959. The number of students in all levels of education increased from 105,000 to 3,257,000 between 1914 and 1978. In 1970, there were 18.93 university students per 1,000 people in Kazakhstan, roughly the same as the all-union average.<ref name=":02" />
