While global absolute poverty (measured as less than $1.25/day) declined from 40.5 to 25.2 per cent between 1981 and 2008 (a 15.3% reduction), China begin the period with a much higher rate (84.0 per cent) and succeeded in reducing it to 13.1 per cent (a 70.9% reduction).
