Rishi Sunak is a British Conservative politician and the current Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Previously, he was Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022 and also worked for Goldman Sachs.[1] He and his wife, the daughter of an Indian tech billionaire, have a combined net worth of over $880 million, making him the richest prime minister in British history.[2] Sunak supports former prime minister Boris Johnson[1] and opposes striking workers.[2]

Early life

Completed an MBA at Stanford University where he met his wife-to-be, daughter of an Indian tech billionaire.[2]

Rise to power

Sunak became MP for Richmond (Yorks) in 2015.[1]

Served as Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 2019 to 2020 and Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022.[1]

Sunak became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in October 2022 following on from Liz Truss as the third Prime Minister in two months.[1]

Policy

Sunak supports the Rwanda Plan, an inhumane scheme to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda against their will. Sunak's government paid Rwanda $180 million in exchange for them accepting the flow of refugees from the United Kingdom to Rwanda. UK courts have thus far blocked the plan but Sunak is committed to continuing to push for it.[3]
