The Left, often known by its German name Die Linke, is a political party in Germany. Its main faction opposes sending weapons to Ukraine but supports sanctions against Russia.[1]
History
Foundation
In 2007, the Party of Democratic Socialism, formed after the annexation of the GDR, merged with the left wing of the West German SPD to form Die Linke. Sahra Wagenknecht, the former leader of the PDS's communist wing, was the co-leader of Die Linke in the Bundestag from 2015 to 2019.[1]
2023 split
In October 2023, Sahra Wagenknecht and nine other MPs split to form a new party. A poll on 31 October found that 14% of voters would consider voting for the new party.[1]
