ALBA or ALBA–TCP, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America is an intergovernmental organization which advocates for the economic, social and political integration of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.

This treaty integrates countries that are more aligned with the Bolivarian ideology and with the emancipation of Latin America and the Caribbean.

History

The agreement was proposed by Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez and was first signed by Cuba in 2004. Bolivia under Evo Morales joined in 2006, Nicaragua under Daniel Ortega in 2007, and Ecuador under Rafael Correa in 2009. Honduras under Manuel Zelaya joined in 2008, but withdrew in 2010 after the 2009 Honduran coup.

Bolivia withdrew in November 2019 after the OAS-backed coup, but rejoined following the 2020 Bolivian general election which returned the Movement for Socialism (MAS) to power with Luis Arce as president.
