William Massey was a Statesian communist and founding member of PSL. He was arrested several times, including once at a House Committee on Un-American Activities meeting.[1]

Early life[edit | edit source]

Massey was born in 1934 and attended Cardinal Hayes High School in New York City. He joined the Marines but was later discharged.[1]

Political activism[edit | edit source]

Massey hitchhiked to Albany, Georgia in 1962 to participate in the Civil rights movement. He joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee under the direction of James Forman and ended up in the same jail as Martin Luther King Jr. and Bob Zellner. He was radicalized in jail and joined the Socialist Workers Party.

In 1974, he was expelled from the SWP and joined the newly founded Workers World Party. In 2004, he helped found the Party for Socialism and Liberation.[1]
