The Great Man-Made River (GMMR), nicknamed the "World's Eighth Wonder" during the Jamahiriya, the network remains the world's largest irrigation project in human history. The project pumps ground-water from the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System up from the ground and towards Libyan settlements and agrarian centers through pipelines and stores it in large reservoirs. The GMMR remains the largest source of water for all uses in Libya and covers a distance of nearly 3,000 kilometers.
