Negro World was the newspaper of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League founded by Amy Ashwood Garvey in 1914. The newspaper was distributed internationally across the United States, Caribbean, Africa and Europe and was printed primarily in English, French and Spanish. Due to the anti-imperialist stances of the UNIA and Negro World's contributors, the paper was banned by colonial administrators in Africa in 1922 and those affiliated with the paper and its parent organization were targeted with arrests or deportations. Garveyite activities were heavily surveilled and cracked down on especially in Belgian Congo, Apartheid South Africa, British Kenya and Liberia. At its peak, the newspaper distributed hundreds of thousands of articles weekly.
