The Virgin Islands of the United States are a U.S. colony in the Caribbean.

History[edit | edit source]

After buying Alaska in 1867, William Seward tried to buy the Virgin Islands from Denmark. He created a treaty with Denmark, which Congress rejected. In 1900, Congress approved a similar treaty, but the Danish parliament rejected it.[1]

During the First World War, Woodrow Wilson bought the Virgin Islands for $25 million in order to avoid a potential German takeover of the islands if Germany took over Denmark.[2]
