Johann Georg Elser (4 January 1903 – 9 April 1945) was a German carpenter who, on 8 November 1939, tried to assassinate German leader Adolf Hitler, along with a number of other prominent Nazi Party (NSDAP) officials, with a time bomb at the Bürgerbräukeller in Munich, Germany. Elser managed to kill eight people (seven of whom were NSDAP members) and injure another 62, but Hitler and the Nazi Party leadership narrowly survived the attack as they had left the building thirteen minutes before the explosion took place. The event became known as the Bürgerbräukeller Bombing.

Elser was apprehended near the Swiss border shortly before the bomb exploded, and he was interrogated and tortured by the Gestapo. In 1945 Elser was murdered at the Dachau concentration camp.
