Alexei Arkhipovich Leonov (30 May 1934 – 11 October 2019) was a Soviet cosmonaut and the first person in the world to do a spacewalk.

Early life

Leonov was born in Listvyanka in Siberia, one of 12 children. He trained as an air force pilot and married Svetlana Pavlovna in 1959.[1]

Space program

Leonov chosen to participate in the Soviet space program in 1960 In 1965, he exited the spacecraft Voskhod 2 while in orbit and floated in space for 12 minutes and 9 seconds at the end of a 5-meter tether. He returned to space in 1975 as commander of the Apollo-Soyuz project working with Statesian astronauts.[1]
