Georgian Marxist–Leninist revolutionary, political theorist, and the elected leader of the Soviet Union from 1924 till his death in 1953. Stalin oversaw the transformation of the USSR from an underdeveloped non-industrialized backwater to a socialist superpower. Under Stalin's leadership, the Soviet Union played a principal role in the defeat of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan in the Second World War.
