Rafael Vicente Correa Delgado (born 6 April 1963) is an Ecuadorian politician who served as President of Ecuador from 2007 to 2017.

Presidency

In 2009, Correa refused to renew the U.S. lease for a military base in Ecuador. He offered to renew the release if the U.S. let Ecuador have a military base in Miami, Florida.[1]

Show trial

After his presidency ended, Correa fled to Belgium. In April 2020, a kangaroo court in Ecuador sentenced him to eight years in prison and banned him from running for office until 2045. His vice president, Jorge Glas, was also imprisoned from 2017 to 2022.[2]
