José Julián Martí Pérez (28 January 1853 – 19 May 1895) was a Cuban revolutionary and poet.

Early life

Martí was born on 28 January 1853 on Paula street in Havana.[1]

He was the oldest son of eight children.[2]

Ten Years' War

In February 1869, during the first Cuban War of Independence, Martí wrote the poem 10 de Octubre, which was published later that year in El Siboney. He was imprisoned in October 1869 and sentenced to six years in prison in December.[3]

Martí died on 19 May 1895 at the Battle of Dos Ríos.[1]
