Illinois[Note 1], officially the State of Illinois, often referred to as the Land of Lincoln[Note 2] or the Prairie State, is a federal state of the United States. Illinois borders the US states of Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky and Indiana, as well as having a coast on Lake Michigan.
Notes
- ↑ Derived from Miami-Illinois 'Iliniwek', meaning 'The best people'.
- ↑ Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky and spent most of his childhood in Indiana; although he did move to Illinois in 1830, serving in the Illinois Militia during the Black Hawk War and being elected to both the Illinois House of Representatives & the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois's 7th district.
